These are the stories of real Coast Guard rescue swimmers. Prepared to brave the most dangerous situations, including raging seas, hurricane-force winds, near-vertical cliff faces, and underwater caves – always with the goal “so others may live” – this elite group of individuals considers their job “the best job in the Coast Guard, the best job in the military.”
Shot on location in Elizabeth City, North Carolina and Cape Disappointment, Washington, this award-winning one-hour special goes behind the scenes to reveal how these individuals must train and to understand why so few make the grade. Featuring dramatic on-scene footage, the program takes viewers into life-threatening rescue situations and includes rescue swimmers describing the events from their own vantage points. The history behind the rescue swimmer program is also explained.
Produced in association with the Discovery Channel, Coast Guard: Rescue Swimmers was created by the executive producers of Coast Guard, the first reality series based on a branch of the military. Coast Guard ran for three years on over 100 stations across the country and still airs internationally as Sea Rescue.
